Fish Facts!
Serrasalmus altispinis, commonly known as the Black Piranha or Highfin Piranha, is a remarkable and relatively less known species of piranha native to the Amazon River basin in South America. This specific species is known for its unique characteristics, including its striking appearance and its fascinating behavior.
One of the most distinguishing features of S. altispinis is its high dorsal fin, which sets it apart from other piranha species. This fin, adorned with striking black markings, can reach impressive heights, further adding to the species' distinctive appearance. The body of the Black Piranha is generally dark or blackish in color, providing excellent camouflage in the murky waters of its native habitat.
S. altispinis is a relatively small species of piranha, with individuals typically reaching lengths of 6 to 10 inches. Despite its smaller size compared to some of its piranha relatives, it is known for its aggressive nature and powerful jaws. Like all piranhas, it possesses the characteristic interlocking teeth designed for slicing through flesh and bone, making it a formidable predator in its environment.
These piranhas are opportunistic carnivores, feeding on a varied diet of fish, crustaceans, insects, and smaller aquatic animals. They are also known to scavenge on carrion, helping to maintain the ecological balance in their aquatic ecosystems.
Serrasalmus Piranha Care
MINIMUM TANK SIZE
All types of Serrasalmus Piranhas are solitary fish. Unsuitable to share a tank with any other fish.
You will need a tank of at least 120x50x50 cm. (48x20x20").
TANK REQUIREMENTS
Plants, rocks or drift wood to provide hiding places, the tank lights should be dimmed. Heavy filtration is required to deal with the large amounts of waste this fish produces. A powerhead can be added to provide currents. Care is required in handling, extremely dangerous to hands.
WATER TEMPERATURE
24-29 degrees Celsius (76-84 degrees Fahrenheit).
WATER CHEMISTRY
pH should be between 6.0 - 8.0, ideally slightly acidic to neutral water: pH 6.5 - 7.2 . Soft water is preferred.
COMPATIBLE SPECIES
Extremely dangerous to others. Should generally be kept as solitary fish.
DIET
Fish (whole, fillet or feeders*), shrimp, cockles, mussels, squid, insects, earth worms, pellets. Food items such as poultry, mammal meat and organ meat should be fed sparsely once or twice a month at the most. Meat needs to be unseasoned and trimmed of any fat.
*Live fish need to be quarantined first, so they are safe to feed (containing no diseases or parasites). Goldfish, minnows and other members of the Cyprinid family (Carp-like fish) should be avoided, as these fish contain growth-inhibiting hormones (Thaiminase/Vitamine B1 inhibitors) that could negatively affect the fish's health and development.
